長(zhǎng)毛兔仔兔出生時(shí)無(wú)毛，從第四天開始長(zhǎng)毛，毛生長(zhǎng)得非常迅速。據(jù)測(cè)定，發(fā)育正常的全耳毛幼兔，出生1個(gè)月齡時(shí)，粗毛長(zhǎng)度達(dá)4.2厘米；細(xì)毛長(zhǎng)度達(dá)2.8厘米，乳毛已全部形成；60日齡時(shí)，粗毛長(zhǎng)度達(dá)7.5厘米，細(xì)毛長(zhǎng)度達(dá)4.5厘米；90日齡時(shí)，毛纖維的生長(zhǎng)速度與成年兔一樣，每晝夜細(xì)毛的生長(zhǎng)速度平均為0. 6-0.7毫米。剪毛后的成年兔，被毛再生長(zhǎng)到符合優(yōu)級(jí)品質(zhì)的長(zhǎng)度約需75-90天。因此，長(zhǎng)毛兔一年可剪毛4-5次。實(shí)驗(yàn)證明，毛用兔的產(chǎn)毛量與綿羊相比，單位體重產(chǎn)毛量比綿羊高2-3倍，而所需的營(yíng)養(yǎng)卻是綿羊的1/3。
